That's even more compromising than logging into a bank web site - if someone cracks that, they have the keys to your kingdom.

The reality is that there is no such thing as an OK unsecured network. Don't use them. Ever.

If you absolutely *must*, make sure that you disable email fetching/push and get a VPN account. (Note that automatic services will happen in the open until the VPN tunnel is established.)
