If you don't mind not having a light and a 5" screen is enough for you this is a really nice device. I bought the original Mini and I read with it a lot till I got a lighted ereader. I gave my Mini away then although I've ended up with another one now. I don't read with it but I use it to loan books to friends and they all like it too.

As for Kobo service, I needed them twice for other Kobo devices (not the mini) and they're very difficult to get hold of. It took 2 weeks of trying every day to get them on the phone. Once I did they were very helpful. I've never had a warranty problem with them so I don't know how they might handle that.
