It can be done well. A superb example is Barbara Rosenblat's narration of the "Amelia Peabody" series for Audible, in which she does the most wonderful baritone voice for Amelia's husband, Emerson. Of course, she is a professional voice actress, but it illustrates that it's certainly possible to do it successfully. If you're not a professional, though, it's probably best to avoid making the attempt, I agree.
