It's irrelevant when he died when considering the US public domain. All that matters is when the book was published. This book was published in 1945, which means that no, it's not in the US public domain, and it would copyright infringement for you to download it from a site where it was in the public domain, such as PG Australia.

It can be hosted on MR on 1st Jan 2016, which is when it enters the "life+70" public domain, but to repeat, it is not in the public domain in the US, and you mustn't download it.
