The external SD card isn't missing at the system level as Windows will see it when the Touch is plugged in. And nickel will hang for a few seconds when you eject the card (but that might be the OS doing something and nickel not getting any CPU time).
I haven't looked much more than that as I don't use the Touch much now except for testing. Almost the only time I notice this is after a firmware upgrade when I restart the device to test if this has been fixed. On the other occasions I notice it, I just eject the card, wait a little bit and push it back in.
