IMHO 'Cheats' by the publisher of standard editions in using a general body-text line-spacing: greater than 1.2, is to make the book appear longer (use more screens).
Like any other generality, there are good reasons to use line-spacing: with bigger or smaller numbers. Those usually are restricted to a small portion, not the main body of the work.
