I agree that you need as much as free space as possible. But the thin black line is in my opinion very discreet. Much more so than in numbers

That doesn't give you more free space. If you remove the header you won't gain any useful space, it simply stays empty. It would be nice if removing the header would give you two more lines of 'real' text.
