It seems Android File Transfer is an MTP implementation for Mac.
Thus in order for it to do anything the device needs to be setup to show itself as an MTP device when connected.
So make your your devices are setup as such.
If they are using USB Mass Storage then they should show up in Mac w/out any additional software app help.
