The way it works today is that the automatic connection uses the same "sync books" setting as the last manual connection.

I could change it to do syncing if that is the only enabled connection type. I could also change it to do syncing if that connection type is enabled. What I don't want to do is add yet another option to choose which connection type to use when automatically connecting.

Also note that if you enable automatic connections, the current implementation will continue to attempt automatic connections even if both wireless device connections are disabled.
