This is indeed very neat.
There are 2 points though:
1. Because of the glass/plastic layer, it will deteriorate the eInk quality of reading.
2. More importantly, I believe because of all the IR sensors and how they sit behind eInk, and do sensing, I guess it's not possible with this approach. What do you (and your friend) think?

But thanks, I never looked around what people have done with DIY frontlight designs and projects.
