You can come pretty close to it with some reading apps. For example, if reading PDFs is important to you (and academic PDFs are a prime "use case" for wanting to access multiple documents simultaneously), the "GoodReader" iOS app has a tabbed interface which allows you to flip between two (or many) different documents - or even different parts of the same document - with a tap on the tab bar.
