If you use Download Metadata in the Edit Metadata window, and only one result is shown, it is because calibre only found one result.
Certain identifiers values will override the book matching -- e.g. if you have the amazon:xxxxxxxxxxxxxx identifier, that will tell calibre to search by ASIN on Amazon.
If you have broken/malformed identifiers, that might screw things up (or other people have had bizarre results match).
