I mostly read from my tablet at night, while in bed. And I don't know how people can read on their backs... In short, I always have my tablet propped up using either my cover (yeay for rotation!) or a pillow or even a cat, while laying on my side. No need to hold the tablet up.
If I'm reading on the couch, or hammock, I generally hold the reader up, but those are almost never long reading sessions as I never can find a comfy reading position on the couch and I always fall asleep in the hammock
