I have no problem reading on tablets, it doesn't bother my eyes at all. I used to love reading on my Nexus 7. However, since I read outside a lot in bright light, I was always having to switch between devices. So now I read only on my Kobo as it's just easier for me to use a single dedicated device for reading. I do use my iPad for PDFs though.
