Having watched my wife transition from my venerable Kindle KB 3G (broken screen) to the new $49 Fire tablet, I think that for normal reading indoors most people don't care what the device is. The Fire just goes on the table with the other devices to be charged overnight. An added benefit is that you can browse the internet (over WiFi) without changing devices.
She had a choice of course. I offered to
1. pay $43 for a new Kindle screen and try to fix the old device
2. get the latest paper-white Kindle
3. get the Fire (any of them.)
Personally, I still do most of my reading on whatever computer I happen to be on. (It's just the way I roll.)
