Sounds like we have the same Mac Mini. I wish they still sold the Mini where you could easily upgrade the RAM yourself which is what I did, but now a days they solder it in.
I might update it to run El Capitan. I use it mostly with Windows 10 installed via Boot Camp though. I need a Windows computer for programming my amateur radios (ham) as well as rig control. Not too many apps for that available on Mac OS X. I use the MBP for the heavy lifting and it has El Capitan installed.
