A while back I went to my local library and they had a shelf of books that were recommended reading.
This particular book was written by a War correspondent and in the introduction he was saying stuff like how his curiosity had drawn him to be a war correspondent, but now he regrets it as he's seen way too much and he's pretty messed up now (losing sleep, alcoholism etc).
Basically it's a collection of real life war stories and he also researches what happens to the various soldiers after they leave the armed forces.
I think it covers stories from WW2 and up to the recent actions in the Middle East, so it's a pretty recent book (probably published in the last few years).
I read about a third of it after work one day in the library, but didn't have my library card with me, so couldn't take it out.
Since then, I can't find it in the library. I'd love to track it down and finish it.
I found it a sad and moving read.
