Perhaps what would work best for me is that the identifiers field defaulted to "~ unknown ~" when null. An added identifier would replace it and if the identifiers were deleted it would reappear. Jeez that's asking a lot so perhaps consider for version 10.1.
identifiers:false will find books with None assigned (not all do)
