Swetlana Alexijewitsch, and last year's winner Patrick Modiano, both write about global conflict events -- Modiano about WW II and Alexijewitsch about Afghanistan and Chernobyl. I wonder if the Committee is selecting winners for preserving memories of vital events within literary works, and not just for critical acclaim or popularity .... in a way, making the selection based on service to humanity (like the other awards) rather than just achieving mastery of literary technique.
