I had an Uncle in WWII. He served on the USS Bogue (CVE-9). The ship received a Presidential Unit Citation and three battle stars for her World War II service. I had a cousin on the USS Hornet when it was sunk. He survived the sinking. My father was in Vietnam in 1968 and 1969.
My best friends father commanded the USS Frankford (DD-497) in WWII. He won two Silver Stars. He was awarded one for taking his ship in as close as he could to the beach at Normandy and shelling enemy artillery that had the Allied Armed Forces pined on the beach.
