It doesn't explain my interest. I had no relatives "close enough to count" who were in WW2 (or Korea, or Vietnam for that matter. And, no, they weren't draft dodgers. ha). I think that there was a great-great-great uncle or two in WW1. It seems like there are a lot of people who do have the interest because of what you suggested, however.

That is probably the main reason for some people, though. I know that if my grandfather had been in WW2 that it would have sharpened my interest considerably from what it already is.
What is really odd is on dad's side, I had at least one uncle in WW2 and another uncle served during Vietnam. Not sure why my dad didn't get drafted for Vietnam.
But then my dad's mom had 11 kids in a 24 year span.
