BIOS updates can and do brick systems but driver issues don't normally go that deep. Software breaking hardware can happen but it is rare and usually on purpose. (STUXNET, for example.)

And you should be able to boot from a disk or stick into safe mode in that case.
If the machine will not come on at all that's a power or hardware issue.
If the display driver is corrupted there are ways around it.
