Nesbit, Edith: These Little Ones (Short Story Collection). v1. 06 October 2015

These Little Ones
by Edith Nesbit (1858–1924)
First published 1909.

The text of this book is in the public domain in countries where copyright is “Life+70” or less, and in the USA.

------------
Edith Nesbit Bland, English author and poet, published approximately 40 books for children under the name of E. Nesbit. Her reputation rests almost exclusively on her work for children, but she also wrote for adults. In addition to about a dozen novels for adults, she published many short stories.
* * *
“These Little Ones” is a poignant and sometimes bittersweet collection of tales about the tragedies of childhood. Nesbit’s son had died some years earlier at age fifteen, and some of the writing here feels painfully personal.

------------
Text was obtained from the Victorian Women Writers Project at indiana.edu, transcripton of the 1909 first edition. Punctuation, diacritics, and italics have been formatted; some spelling and punctuation modernized/standardized. Chapter heads are cross-linked to in-line Table of Contents. Embedded fonts for titling and drop-caps.

------------
If you don't drop a tear or two over some of these stories, I feel sorry for you.
