One possibility I've experimented with is to create a link to an external folder, then import the link (.lnk file) into Calibre. Opening the .lnk "book" will open it to the folder where the external files are.

I've confirmed that it works, but there are some limitations. Two that come to mind.

1. It only works in Windows, although there might be a way to do something similar on Mac and Linux. If you use this method, you'll be tied to one operating system.

2. Be very careful about where you put the external folders. Since they're not stored in the Calibre database, if you ever decide to change their locations, you're going to have to go through each link in your library individually and update it by hand. In other words, changing your mind later will cost you.
