C. Dale Brittain's series of the magician for "Yurt". Don't remember but the magician was appointed as the Royal Magician was in Yurt because of being near the bottom of the magicians......

For me, lots of fun as a humorous fantasy/magic.

Then there is John Morressy's magician who specializes in "counter magic". Don't think that the magician was not that good in magic tho.
