I haven't read the book, nor seen the movie yet.
But I am always surprised when a movie adapted from a book is close to the book. A full-size novel is almost impossible to compress into a single movie without a lot of cutting, welding, and compressing.
I've only ever seen two movies which were very, very close to the book, and they were both short books. The Maltese Falcon (and even then the book had to be cut, leaving out one character among other things) and Mr Majestyk. And when I read that Mr Majestyk (the novel) was written by Elmore Leonard from his own movie script, I could see why it fitted to closely.
The hardest part is maintaining the spirit and style of the book, while adapting it to a different medium.
