I have a Fire Phone in my shirt pocket. Before that I had a Moto G 1st generation. Before that a Samsung Galaxy Player 4.2. Before that it was an Archos 4.3 Android device. I have no phone service on this thing. It's a small computer that lives in my shirt pocket. I put it in my pocket when I dress in the morning and it stays there till I go to bed at night.
I've been doing this now for about 5 years, or thereabouts. I've never had a problem. I'm reasonably careful but only that. I once dropped the Archos when I bent over. It was my only accident so far and no detectable damage was done.
I do agree with you that there's some risk in doing this but not a lot. It's pretty safe.
Oh yeah, when I first got my Kobo Mini I carried that in the front pocket of my pants for a few months. It was in there by itself so no keys or coins could scratch it. I still found myself reading on my phone when I was out of the house so I gave that up. A neighbor is still using that Mini and it's just fine.
