sorry for the confusion.
I have a laptop and keep the "books folder" at the desktop of my laptop to be added to calibre
No networked folder
yes I have the security software
Heat: I have a Core Temp program shows the temperature all the time after I have burnt my motherboard because of rendering process of an editing program. I don't use editing software anymore and watch the temperature to be under 50 c degree
Dying HD: could be the case
defrag: I do it from time to time
If it's just me experiencing slowness , then it would be safe to go back to 2.39 or 2.40 when it comes out (I have downgraded to 2.35 again today)
Thank you for the pointers I appreciate very much, theducks

Is there a Networked folder in this picture? on (now poor) WiFi?
Security software (A/V) can change as frequently as hourly (the normal for free versions is a daily update)
Heat will cause a slow down (Throttling), trying to save you CPU from clogged fins or a failing fan
Dying HD will retry their reads or writes (usually, a Clone onto a new drive will still save the pain of a full re-build. do it NOW). Or the drive is just overcrowded and fragmented)
