Some won't be worth while, and you'll throw them out after a chapter or two. But there are some that are quite good, and will get you hooked on a new author. (They you'll find you want to buy more books by that author; that's okay if it's a great author!)

By "follow" the threads, I mean "subscribe" via email, and once a day find out what books are new and free. I've got so many free books that I'm swimming in them!

Plus, of course, the Amazon Prime ones, which are indeed rather hard to find. You can also find them (somewhat more easily, but that's debatable) FROM the kindle. But then it's hard to wade through and get the right topic type. It's so hard to find them, that it's a good thing one can only get one a month. I can't FIND them faster than that (or else I'm not willing to search).
Hi Deb! Yes, virtual mountains of free books. In my case, lovingly tweaked and polished epubs, so the eink Kindles never really tempted me. However, a Fire tablet could be set up with a reading ap that would use epubs, right?

Some of the most beautifully formatted free ebooks I've ever found live right here on mobileread. There are some awesome book-crafters among us!
