1830s New Orleans was a strange place, although you can still see echoes of the same culture in the Skip Langdon novels by Julie Smith, set over 150 years later, the first of which I also read for this challenge in 2013.

Barbara Hambly's Benjamin January books are excellent historical fiction mysteries and do a good job of describing old New Orleans. Take it from a 9th generation New Orleanian.
