Medical textbooks rely heavily on colour. Scientific papers rely on diagrams, tables, graphs, sometimes colour, two-column tiny texts. Get a ten inch tablet and be done with it, honestly. Six inch readers are great for reading novels in reflowable formats.

As to which tablet: first decide on iOS or Android, consider your budget, and go from there. Both have high quality tablets available.
