It's not the backstory or story of the main characters that's at the heart of this discussion. It's that while we have different main characters such as Rincewind, Wizards, Witches, Death, The Guards, etc. We have some of the same minor/secondary/background characters and places. These progress while we read about different main characters.
An example character we see progress/change behind the scenes of stories with different main characters is Cut-Me-Own-Throat Dibbler.
