It depends on the product. I know that Surefire flashlights and Craftsman hand tools are guaranteed for life no matter what. Just present an original item, and the manufacturer will repair or replace it on the spot, no questions asked.

Complex electronic products, on the other hand, tend to have relatively short, non-transferrable warranties, and "open box" items rarely carry any kind of warranty at all. Frankly, the OP is lucky the seller didn't take the money and run.
