I'm looking to avoid "do you want to turn on Wifi", and the subsequent delay. I'm willing to sacrifice battery life, depending on the extent. I'd have to try it and see the difference.

Ok, if you insist: the easiest way is to add:
"../vlasovsoft/wifi.sh" to /koreader/koreader.sh and /kbmenu/onstart/start_koreader.sh on the first blank line before: ./reader.lua
