Maybe I should clarify, I am looking for the books of the last 6-7 years. Sanderson is good, but I wouldn't call Stormlight or Mistborn old-school fantasy. Also, I find his characterization of women really artificial.

What I am looking for is mostly something like a monomyth. Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn was a perfect example of it, maybe I should reread it now that a sequel is coming.
Have you read Elizabeth Moon's "Paksenarrion" series? It's one of my favourite fantasy series of recent years. The original trilogy is published by Baen as a reasonably priced omnibus edition called "The Deed of Paksenarrion".
