A lot of these markdowns are done by the authors and publishers now, not Amazon. So, they can start at any time of day and last anywhere from an hour to longer periods (no more than 5 days for freebies, for most publishers).

Recognizing my ignorance about how it all works, sometimes I put something like "the author/Amazon." But sometimes, not thinking about it, I put "author" or "Amazon," when I really don't know who is responsible. Just mentioning this so Mobilereaders will know.
Thanks for the info about the UCP sale. Sometimes the markdown will last only an hour? I just don't see the point. I did read somewhere on the Web the other day, though, an author say that she had an ebook giveaway for only an hour because when she had it longer people took too many. ha
