Talking Free (nook/Kobo/iTunes) Wicked by Gregory Maguire [Wizard of Oz-Derivative Fantasy]

Wicked: Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West by Gregory Maguire (ISFDB, Wikipedia), is the 1st in his Wicked Years series of public domain-derivative spinoff novels about the subtitular character from L. Frank Baum's classic children's fantasy novels set in the Land of Oz (Wikipedia), and the basis for the eponymous highly popular musical (Wikipedia), free courtesy of publisher HarperCollins' William Morrow imprint.

This is B&N's Free Fridays selection and unusually, they warn that it will only be free there just for one day in their blogpost (instead of throughout the weekend as their offerings usually remain valid for).

Currently free, probably just for today, September 11th @ B&N, Kobo & iTunes & Google Play (all available to Canadians). Price-drop-check linkage for Amazon, where this will likely also go free as well, since it's obviously a special promotion of some sort.

Seems unlikely to cross the pond, as this is either out in a slightly different edition in other countries around the world, or simply appears to be unfree in the ones outside of North America which share the same, though YMMV depending on your locale.

And this has been the selected 3rd (non-repeat) free ebook thread of the day.

Because it's a major treat to get such a massively popular and much-adapted fantasy which in turn is based upon a previous massively popular and much-adapted fantasy, thus demonstrating the enduring utility of the public domain, as well as telling what appears to be a pretty enjoyable story in the bargain.

Enjoy!

Description
This is the book that started it all! The basis for the smash hit Tony Award-winning Broadway musical, Gregory Maguire's breathtaking New York Times bestseller Wicked views the land of Oz, its inhabitants, its Wizard, and the Emerald City, through a darker and greener (not rosier) lens. Brilliantly inventive, Wicked offers us a radical new evaluation of one of the most feared and hated characters in all of literature: the much maligned Wicked Witch of the West who, as Maguire tells us, wasn’t nearly as Wicked as we imagined.

When Dorothy triumphed over the Wicked Witch of the West in L. Frank Baum's classic tale, we heard only her side of the story. But what about her arch-nemesis, the mysterious Witch? Where did she come from? How did she become so wicked?

Gregory Maguire has created a fantasy world so rich and vivid that we will never look at Oz the same way again.
