I haven't noticed flash ever outperforming HTML5, and besides, it is already more bloated than HTML5 will ever be.
The good news is that HTML5 is a standard, so anyone who wants can create their own, better version. Competition is good, it's why we have standards for the web.

It also annoys me a lot my old gingerbread phones worked great with flash and my new ones can't even view it.

It annoys you that they removed support for flash, and therefore flash doesn't work? That isn't a flaw in HTML5, it has nothing to do with HTML5.

Another thing to bear in mind is I've recently noticed Virgins catchup service in the UK (and I'm sure others) insist on genuine flash and refuse to work with even chromes "pepper flash" substitute.

Well, too bad they don't use HTML5, then, which everyone could use.
Poor Google, their official version of flash doesn't work like *real* flash?
