Reading the original post, I think what is happening is that the site is creating the epubs an setting these calibre series name in the metadata. But, they are not setting the index. On import, calibre is extracting the series info, but as there is no index, it is using 1 for all the books. I have seen this elsewhere where the series is being used for a common "Universe" and there is no real order for the books in the universe. Of course, maybe they site is creating the books with the series index set to 1.

In any case, I haven't seen a solution for this. But, I also haven't looked.

Thinking about my book adding process, I wouldn't mind if the metadata editor was displayed after adding a single book. The first thing I do after adding a book is to fix the metadata and cover. Automating that step could be handy. I'm not sure what I would want to see if I added a few books.
