As silly as arguing about this is; how can it be "utterly wrong?" Surely the reasoning that led to the formation of the Fellowship could have just as easily been served had the entire Fellowship been flown to its destination(s) (or at least closer) on the wings of giant eagles?

Don't get me wrong; I think the story was better served by an arduous journey. But make no mistake about it: being rescued several times by creatures who were easily capable of at least shortening the journey (there was a need for urgency, after all) IS a minor plothole at the very least. No matter how one wants to explain it away.
