That's really unfortunate, but you're likely right that that's the cause. From what I've seen it's rarely a direct impact of an object on the screen or even a drop of the device that kills the screen. It's usually a subtle twisting/bending. IMHO if you're traveling with it you need it in a solid box rather than just a cover because covers still allow flex. Personally I've never used a cover (I do primarily use it at home) but I have a wooden box I keep it in when I pack it in luggage etc.
