No matter what exactly the reason is, I think it was a good decicion. "Kindle" has grown to be accepted as the name for reading only devices. That is why it was a bit confusing that the fire tablet was called Kindle Fire. I welcome the change (around the same time IIRC) from Kindle Fire to Fire tablet. It is less confusing - Kindle is for ebooks. The Kindle is dedicated ereader. If you want ebooks on a multifunction device (e.g. Fire tablet) you will need the Kindle app. Books are bought from Amazon, including ebooks for the Kindle and Kindle app. All is less confusing now. Wouldn't you agree?
I don't really care why Amazon claims they did it, and maybe it was for foreign markets. But even in the US it is better now, IMHO.
