I don't know if this is permafree, or if it's a sale. Stephen Goldin did the excellent Jade Darcy series as well as the Family d'Alembert Series
This is book one of a rewrite of the Family d'Alembert series in fact, with the rewritten series being dubbed "Agents of ISIS". He's got a post on GoodReads explaining the difference between the series. Sounded interesting, especially since I hadn't read the original one, so I grabbed it.
