"Transfer via USB" does know what device the content is being delivered to. Remember Amazon's DRM is locked to a device, not to an account, so when you do a "transfer via USB" you have to tell Amazon's server what specific Kindle the content is being delivered for.

It doesn't work like that. The encryption key for K4PC is different to that for a hardware Kindle device.

We're really getting too close to the specific details of DRM removal here, where we aren't allowed to discuss.
