Lucinda Riley's Hothouse Flower is a bit like this. It's well written, but I didn't like one of the main characters so it didn't work so well for me, but that needn't apply to others, of course :-)

I can believe that a man can leave his beloved because duty demands it. But when he has unprotected sex with her first, and she lives in a culture where illegitimate children are a huge stigma, his selfishness looms a lot higher than his love, to me. So I couldn't believe that he loved her all that much, and thus one of the main love stories didn't work for me.
