No, just use a book-style case so that the screen is protected in transit. Screen protectors can interfere with infrared touch, and don't protect the fragilest part anyway (glass screen substrate). Your biggest risks are temperature extremes, bending/twisting, and impact, and screen protectors do nothing.
I don't use a screen protector on any of my iDevices, either, and haven't since the iPhone 1. The gorilla glass is incredibly scratch-resistant. I guess if I was routinely throwing them in a pocket with keys and tools I might, but that seems to me a rather terrible way to treat any electronic device.
