they don't usually have a problem keeping their own proprietary formats alive in the case of competing open standards
MS dropped LIT because it became a dead format because Adobe had RMDSK/ADE on more computers/devices. It was a lost cause to keep LIT going. Especially since ePub is basically a newer version of LIT.
