Your ereader should automatically upgrade to the latest firmware when you register it with Kobo.

If you don't want to register it, and you know what to do, there are threads here on how to fake the registration and sideload the firmware yourself.

Unless you understand the dangers of sideloading the firmware, I'd recommend that you don't do that, and just use the normal automatic firmware update process.

The five minutes of startup may have been downloading and installing the latest firmware. What is the current firmware on the device?
