Personally, I'd much, much rather read on an EInk device. My new Paperwhite 3 is marvellous.

There's one huge difference between those old PDA's and today's phones: ratio. Those PDA's where 4:3, today's phones are generally 16:9.
I never had any problem reading my PDA, but I hate reading on my phone. It's way too narrow compared to the length. A 16:10 ratio would be much better (I like reading on my tablet, which has that 16:10 screen, but I prefer the 4:3 of my e-ink readers over that)
