Push comes to shove and it is faster than fighting the problem:
Put a Place Marker where the pictures belongs:
eg
PLACE PICTURE ### (assumes pictures are numbered
)
Using the book Editor (or Sigil) Import
the lot of pictures (File Add Existing...)
Then use Search (REGEX) PLACE PICTURE \d+
Use the
place picture toolbar item and replace the marker with the picture named
Ship it
